Arorokiaswamy Velumani was born in 1959, in a small village near Coimbatore. His father was a landless farmer and his mother was a housewife who reared buffaloes and sold their milk to sustain the family. Growing up, his family could not afford even two square meals a day.
Today, Dr Velumani — founder, chairman, and managing director of Thyrocare Technologies, a chain of diagnostic and preventive care laboratories — is worth close to ₹4,000 crores and features in the Forbes Richest Indians list. In two decades, he has nurtured Thyrocare into the world’s largest thyroid testing laboratory, with a network of more than 1,000 outlets across India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Middle East.
Talking about how he struggled to educate himself and succed despite the barricades, he says, “It’s important that one should have confidence in oneself and not sleep in over-confidence. Life is neither too short nor too long. Don’t become impatient or lazy. Everything is possible if you pursue it.”
