Tata Power said the commercial operation of the 120-MW Unit 5 in Jojobera, Jamshedpur, with the grid and the rest of the generation units at Tata Power's Jojobera Thermal Power Plant has been completed. The coal-based plant has been built at the company's site and had been running at full load since March 16. With the addition of the unit, the total capacity of Jojobera Thermal Power Station is now 547.5 MW.
The plant will supply power to Tata Steel to meet the increasing demand at its Jamshedpur works. Mr Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power, said, “The commercial operation of Unit 5 at Jojobera marks a significant step towards augmenting power requirements of Tata Steel.” The 120 MW-Unit 5 is an asset of Industrial Energy Ltd, a joint-venture between Tata Power and Tata Steel. It was set up to develop captive power projects to meet the requirements of Tata Steel.
