Banmali Agrawala, a veteran in power and energy industry, will be joining Tata Sons from October 1, as President, Infrastructure, Defence and Aerospace, the company announced.

This marks Agrawala’s second stint at Tata Group — he served as a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director – Strategy and Business Development of Tata Power from 2008 to 2011 and was also nominated to the board of other Tata Group Companies and joint ventures.

After he left Tata Group in 2011, he joined GE South Asia as President & CEO. Prior to Tata Power, Banmali was with the Finland’s Wartsila Group for over 21 years.

In his new role at Tata Sons, Agrawala will oversee the infrastructure, defence and aerospace verticals where group companies have significant presence and will report to Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.

“Banmali’s global experience in these industries will be very beneficial as we build scale and aspire for the next phase of growth,” Chandrasekaran said. Banmali is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the Mangalore University and is also an alumnus of the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.

During his six-year tenure at GE, Agrawala led the expansion of GE business in India and oversaw an acquisition of Alstom Energy which was dubbed a part of GE's transformation to a digital industrial company.
