The luxury car makers, Volvo Auto India, is aiming to double its market share considering the growth being witnessed in the luxury car segment in the country, Mr Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India, has said.

He pointed out that the company had sold 150 cars in the first three months of the calendar year and the figure is expected to touch 600 by the end of the current year. In 2010, Volvo had delivered 130 cars, he said.

Mr Voijs, who was here in connection with the launch of the new Volvo S 60 in the Kerala market on Thursday, said that the luxury car makers altogether is targeting to sell around 20,000 cars in the calendar year against 13,000 cars last year.

Of this, Volvo has registered a one per cent market share.

The luxury car market in India at present is roughly one per cent of the total car market against the figure of 0.16 per cent in 2005-06. This is expected to grow further by 2020, he added.

Volvo has established its presence in India three years ago and has since then worked intensively to market the Swedish brand.

Delivery points

The company currently markets its products in India through seven delivery points and plans to open 4-5 by the end of the year.

The new dealerships will be in Jaipur, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad, he added.

Volvo currently sells its four premium models in India – luxury SUV's, Volvo XC90 and XC60 and luxury Sedan Volvo S80.

He said that there are no plans to set up a manufacturing facility in India and the company is importing the cars to India through Kochi Port.

There has been a tremendous improvement in the handling facility at the port with the commissioning of the new container terminal at Vallarpadam.

The company is also making use of its warehousing facility at Kochi to move the vehicles to various destinations.

Referring to Kerala market, he said there has been an encouraging response for luxury segment vehicles and the people are specifically asking for more specialities in the vehicle.

Mr Thomas Cherukara, Executive Director, MGF Auto, said the addition of new premium sedan Volvo S60 in the company's offering to customers will further strengthen the relationships with Volvo cars.

The vehicle is competitively priced starting from Rs 27lakh ex- showroom Kochi.
