Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) has taken the shutdown of its ammonia, urea and ammonium bi-carbonate (ABC) units following water scarcity in Mangaluru.

The company informed the stock exchanges on Tuesday that the Mangalore City Corporation has reduced the supply of water from May 14 following the depletion of water level at Thumbe vented dam near Mangaluru. The reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Mangaluru city, also supplies water to the company.

“As the water storage level has reached the dead stock level, the company has taken shutdown of Ammonia, Urea and ABC plants with effect from May 14, 2019. The production will resume once the water is available,” it informed the stock exchanges.

The company has annual manufacturing capacity of 2,17,800 tonnes of ammonia, 3,79,500 tonnes of urea, 2,80,000 tonnes of phosphatic fertilizers (DAP and NP 20:20:00:13), 24,750 tonnes of ABC, 33,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid, 21,450 tonnes of sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde and 22,000 tonnes of specialty fertilizers.

On May 8, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) – another major industry from the region – had announced partial shutdown of refinery complex as a force majeure following the acute water shortage in the River Nethravathi.
