Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), which had made a partial shutdown of its refinery following acute water scarcity in Mangaluru, has begun to restart the units. This follows the Dakshina Kannada district administration withdrawing a ban on the supply of water to industries in the region.
M Venkatesh, Director (Refinery) of MRPL, told BusinessLine on Thursday the refinery has started the process of restarting the phase III units. On April 26, the company had shut down the FCC (fluidised catalytic cracking) and polypropylene units.
Though the shutting down of these two secondary units had had minimal impact on the supply of diesel and petrol, it had affected the production of LPG to some extent.
The continuation of the ban on water supply to industries had forced MRPL to take further the shutdown of phase-III units on May 5. Following this, diesel and petrol production came down around 50 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively.
The polypropylene unit can be restarted in 10-12 days depending on the completion of the FCC maintenance work, Venkatesh said.
The company produces around 500,000 tonnes of diesel, 100,000 tonnes of petrol and 75,000 tonnes of LPG a month.
ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd, a subsidiary of MRPL, had also shut down operations on May 5.
