TVS Motor Company is betting big in the scooter market with its Jupiter model that has recently achieved 10-lakh (one million) mark recently.

TVS sold 1,83,754 units of scooters in April-June quarter this year as compared with 1,56,949 units in corresponding period last year. It sold 1,34,636 units of Jupiter during April-June quarter this year as compared with 99,479 units in April-June last year.

Jupiter, which was launched 33 months back, is one of the flagship models of the company now. It is also helping the company garner 15 per cent market share in the overall scooter market in India.

The scooter market in India is dominated by Honda’s Activa right now that is selling around two-lakh units in a month on an average.

“Competition is coming in as more brands are getting launched. Earlier, there used to be only three-four brands, which has risen to 26-28 brands in the scooter category now. Price band has also expanded in the market which used to be tightly competed,” Aniruddha Haldar, Vice President-Marketing, TVS Motor Company, told BusinessLine.

He said therefore, the company also is playing with different price points in with different products such as Scooty Pep+, Scooty Zest and Wego priced between ₹44,000 and ₹53,000 (all ex-showroom, New Delhi).

New launches

The company will soon launch another model in the scooter range, Haldar said, adding that with better monsoon and Seventh Pay Commission, the market is expected to be better in the current quarter followed by the festive season in the next quarter. Overall, TVS Motor expects a ‘great festive season’, Haldar added.

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures, the scooter sales in the domestic market grew around 31 per cent year-on-year during April-May with 9,23,360 units as compared with 7,08,825 units in corresponding month last year.
