ZF Group, which is in the process of integrating the businesses of US firm TRW with itself, has indicated that it would maintain a status quo on TRW's joint ventures with groups like TVS and Rane in India.

TRW’s present businesses in India include 19 manufacturing units, including joint ventures, two technical centres and one test track.

TRW has joint ventures with Brakes India and Rane Group.

“As far as the legacy TRW side of the business is concerned, we are very comfortable. Brakes India is our longest standing JV anywhere in the world. We have about 60 per cent. I think, there is a great respect between the two companies. We are putting new technologies into that JV,” Peter Lake, Member of the Board of Management, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, told BusinessLine at Aachen, Germany, last week.

He said there was a strong relationship with the Rane Group too. The equal JV — Rane TRW Steering Systems — is a dominant player in the hydraulic steering systems market in India with over 50 per cent share.

Lake said that there would be opportunities to expand business in the new technology areas other than braking and occupancy safety systems in the JV business in India.

Rane TRW clocked revenues of about ₹707 crore in 2015-16, with more than two-thirds of the revenues coming from passenger utility vehicles and medium and heavy commercial vehicles.

Thus, with the integration of TRW, ZF’s portfolio or presence is shifting away from long term JV in steering system (ZF Steering Gear (India) Ltd, which is now part of Bosch), to its TRW brand.

Besides its wholly-owned arm, ZF has ongoing JVs with TVS, Hero and Somic.

ZF showcased its new innovations in commercial vehicle segment at the Aldenhoven Testing Centre in Germany last week.

It included ZF Innovation Truck, which has an evasive manoeuvre assist (EMA) and highway driving assist (HDA) systems.

Developed in cooperation with Wabco, EMA in the truck will automatically steer tractor-trailers around hazardous areas safely and help prevent rear-end collisions.

HAD is another assist system that will actively keep the truck in a lane and at an appropriate, safe distance from the vehicle in front.
