Hire charges range from ₹80 an hour for a hatchback to ₹190 for an A-Class Merc

Zoomcar, a self-drive car rental service company, has extended its operations to Chennai.

Now, customers can simply walk into one of Zoomcar’s outlets with their original driving licence and hire a car or an SUV after making a deposit.

They can use for work or a family drive on weekends. The hire will work out much cheaper than a conventional chauffeur-driven cab with the rate of hire depending on the type of vehicle, according to Greg Moran, Co-founder, Zoomcar.

Addressing reporters at the launch of the company’s operations here, he said the services have been launched in Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi where the businesses were picking up fast.

For now, there are three pick-up points in South Chennai, but more locations will be rolled out.

Zoomcar will soon launch its services in Mumbai and Hyderabad and plans to have a presence in 10 cities in the coming months, he said.

The Bengaluru-based Zoomcar founded in 2013 has a wide range of hatchbacks, SUVs and luxury sedans with a total fleet strength of about 1,000 cars.

It will be tripling its fleet, Moran said.

Customers can hire a vehicle by the hour or for days together.

Hire charges range from ₹80 an hour (₹1,920 for a day) for a hatchback to about ₹190 an hour (₹4,560 a day) for an A-Class Merc.

The price covers a travel distance of 10 km for every hour of hire with additional charge of ₹12-15 a km depending on the vehicle.

There is also a refundable deposit of ₹5,000.

The bookings can be done online.
