The role of discovery skills in the development of a wise leader was discussed at length at a Business Line Club lecture organised at the Department of Business Administration at Mangalore University on Tuesday. The lecture was sponsored by Syndicate Bank.
Delivering the lecture on ‘Discovery skills and wise leadership' for MBA students at the university, Dr Sudhir Raj, Professor of the Nitte-based Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management, said that wise leaders discover new facets of reality and deliver right results in the right way at the right stage.
He said a leader is the one who transforms the art of leadership into the science of results.
Points of discovery skills
Dr Sudhir Raj said discovery skills separate true innovators from rest of the people. He highlighted five important points of discovery skills. They are ‘associating', ‘questioning', ‘observing', ‘experimenting' and ‘networking'.
Explaining them, he said ‘associating' as a major factor in discovery skills help connect unrelated questions, problems, or ideas from different fields. Fresh inputs trigger new associations. Quoting Mr Steve Jobs of Apple Computers, he said creativity is connecting things.
Next factor in discovery skills is the skill of ‘questioning'. It is necessary to question the unquestionable traits, he said.
Referring to the ‘observing' factor, he said the idea of Tata Nano cropped up when Mr Ratan Tata observed a family of Indian middle-class travelling in a scooter.
It is essential to look at small critical behaviour, he said, adding that attention is an important economic resource.
Discovery skills of a wise leader also hinges on the factor of ‘experimenting'. Quoting the example of Thomas Edison, he said he could come out with his invention after failed attempts.
A wise leader also focuses on the ‘networking' factor for growth, as it help connects minds and ideas, he said.
Prof Mustiary Begum, Chairperson of the Department of Business Administration, Mangalore University, presided over the function.
