The West Bengal government on Thursday said that excess rainfall in the Gangetic West Bengal and catchment areas of Damodar Valley in Jharkhand had triggered floods in large parts of the State, claiming six lives so far.
Nine out of 19 districts (that includes Kolkata) are affected by floods, the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr Partha Chatterjee, told the State Assembly. According to the Minister, the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has released over 60,000 cusecs of water. This, coupled with heavy rainfall, has flooded parts of Howrah and Hooghly districts.
Other affected districts include Murshidabad, Birbhum, Burdwan, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Kolkata.
“Relief work in the affected areas is being carried out by the State government,” he said.
