Tamil Nadu will soon have a statutory authority to identify, preserve and restore heritage buildings.
A Bill providing for the establishment of the Authority was introduced in the Assembly today.
The Tamil Nadu Heritage Commission Bill, 2012, to constitute a Heritage Commission to protect the buildings and premises not covered by other laws such as the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 (Central Act 24 of 1958) and the Tamil Nadu Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1966 (Tamil Nadu Act 25 of 1966).
The purview of the proposed law covers all buildings including residential, industrial, commercial and cultural significance.
The Commission will be Chaired by an eminent person committed to heritage conservation, who will be nominated by the State Government, and will head a team of up to 16 members. The members include a government-nominee from an NGO in heritage management and cultural affairs; a representatives from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage; and Secretaries of a number of Government Departments; Commissioner of Museum, Chennai; Archaeological Survey of India; Director, School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University; and representatives from Public Works Department, and Environment.
