Soon, all villages in Andhra Pradesh will have people using smart cards for a variety of purposes.
The enrolments process was almost completed under the Andhra Smart Card Project and over 70 lakh smart cards were issued so far.
Out of a total number of 21,836 Gram Panchayats, the enrolment process was completed in 20,848 Gram Panchayats.
“The process in these villages will be completed very soon and the entire State will be covered under the Smart Card Project,'' said a report prepared recently by the State-Level Bankers Committee of Andhra Pradesh.
The State would need another 50 lakh smart cards in addition to 70 lakh cards issued already. .
Smart cards are to be treated as activated or operationalised when borrowers accounts are credited with the Government benefit by the bank. Banks are also taking special measures to speed up the project including appointment of exclusive officers.
