Andhra University is undertaking a Rs 20-crore project for the extraction of bio-active molecules from medicinal plants and marine organisms, according to the rector, Prof P.V.G.D Prasad Reddy.
The permission of the University Grants Commission (UGC) is awaited. He was speaking at the national seminar on bio-active molecules organised in the university on Wednesday.
In his inaugural address, he spoke about the challenges in bioactive molecule research.
Prof V. Veeriah, Principal, AU college of Science and Technology, explained the importance of bioactive molecules in human health and well-being.
Delivering the key-note address, the Director of the National institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, Dr B. Sesikeran, discussed the importance of different technologies such as agricultural technology, nutritional technology, food technology for food and nutrition security.
He also emphasised that bio-technological advances such as marker assisted breeding and transgenic technology could be used to bring about a significant increase in food production both in quantity and quality.
Prof T. Ramana, Prof. K.P.J. Hemalatha, Prof. T. Raghava rao and other professors from Andhra University and many other Indian universities participated in the inaugural function.
