The West Bengal government today decided to merge West Bengal Rural Energy Development Corporation (WBREDC) with parent West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL). The amalgamation is likely to be completed in the next three to six months. Created in the 1990s, WBREDC became a wholly owned subsidiary of the State distribution utility in 2009. According to Mr Malay De, Principal Secretary in the State Power Ministry, WBREDC has a little over 100 employees on its roll. “The company was practically without job as the parent WBSEDCL is now carrying out rural electrification,” Mr De said.
