The Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, Prof K.V. Thomas, inaugurated the bio-toilet project mooted by the Kochi Corporation near the Ernakulam Town Hall.
The project is being carried out with the assistance of the Forest Industries Technology Ltd. If the trial run in Kochi succeeds, the project will be implemented across the State, the Minister said.
Seven bio-toilet units will be set up in various parts of the city. Of these, three have already started functioning. The toilets, known as ‘green toilets’, will treat the waste in an eco-friendly manner and are also capable of destroying the microbes in the waste.
They are operated on a pay and use basis. The Corporation will be in charge of the daily maintenance till an external agency is appointed for the same through tendering.
