Though language plays an important role in verbal communication, body language and a well-modulated voice go a long way in enabling effective communication, said Major (Retd) K.V. Rajan, Business Consultant (Franchise, Education &Training).

Addressing final-year students of the Achariya College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Viliyanur, Puducherry, at a BL Club lecture presented by Tata Photon+, Major Rajan encouraged the students to understand the importance of body language for effective communication.

He also stressed the importance of non-verbal communication such as dance, theatre and music. His talk centred on explaining the meaning of gestures expressed by the limbs of our body. He illustrated these gestures with a Power Point presentation full of humorous graphics.

The right use of body language enables one to excel in marketing and selling, he said. The graphics illustrated some of the important gestures such as a bright, erect walk indicating one's confidence; standing with hands on hip indicating readiness and aggression; the popular hand-to-cheek pose indicating one's evaluation/thinking prowess; and an open palm expressing sincerity, openness and innocence. He also impressed on the audience the need to avoid negative gestures such as biting one's nails, patting one's hair, rubbing hands, hunching one's shoulders, and crossing one's arms across the chest.

He also gave the students tips for effective communication such as looking the audience directly in the eye, standing up straight, bearing a spontaneous smile, focusing on those with whom one is talking, and using correct language and speaking in a well modulated voice.

He concluded his talk with a cartoon presentation on how to impress others by pursuing achievable goals, having an endearing but genuine smile, sharing and helping, maintaining a youthful spirit, keeping cool under pressure, having good friends, being a team-person and being confident.
