India's carpet exports grew by 20.01 per cent to $75.37 million in February year-on-year, thanks to the rising demand in the US and European markets. The exports stood at $62.80 million in February last year, according to the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) data. “There is a good demand for our products from the US and European markets,” CEPC official said. The US and EU together account for nearly 70 per cent of the country's total carpet exports. During April 2010-February 2011, the exports registered a growth of 23.64 per cent to $579 million compared to $468 million in the same period last year.

The council had set an export target of $650 million for the current fiscal. “We are hopeful that the target will be surpassed as we are also getting good number of orders from new markets such as Russia and Dubai,” the official said. The sector employs 2.5 million people.
