Essar and Hindalco's thermal power projects are among the nine power projects affected by the Environment Ministry's classification of coal blocks as ‘Go' and ‘No-Go' depending on the tree cover in such areas.
Disclosing the details, the Environment Minister, Mr Jairam Ramesh, said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha that coal blocks allotted to these thermal power project proposals were under consideration of the Central Government as they came under forest areas. Other power projects include Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project and Chhattisgarh Energy Pvt Ltd.
Replying to another query, Mr Ramesh said 42 mega power projects from 18 states were pending for environment clearance with his Ministry.
The appraisal of developmental projects, including mega power projects, is undertaken under the provision of Environmental Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, which provides for 105 days for taking a decision after the receipt of complete information from the project proponents, Mr Ramesh said.
