The global financial crisis, emerging economies, human rights and issues relating to expediting delivery of justice will be among the long list of a diverse set of topics that will come up during the five-day Commonwealth Law Conference, the largest such event in the common law world, to be held here at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) during February 5-9.

The 17th Commonwealth Law Conference, expected to have legal luminaries from over 53 countries brainstorm legal issues and share best practices, will be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. The event, held once in two years, is coming to India after 40 years (the last one was held in 1971), according to Mr Soli Sorabjee, former Attorney General of India and Chairman, Local Organising Committee.

Addressing a media conference, he said the event will be addressed by the chief justices and judges of Commonwealth from many jurisdictions. The theme of the conference is Emerging Economies and the Rule of Law: Challenges & Opportunities. The subjects would include human rights and rule of law, corporate and commercial law, federalism, free and fair elections, judicial independence and accountability.

The keynote speakers include Mr Iftikhar Chaudhary, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC, a well-known barrister from the UK, and Mr Sudharshan Reddy, judge of the Supreme Court. The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr Kamalesh Sharma, will address the meet.

Mr Mohamed J. Husain, President of Commonwealth Lawyers Association, said a number of satellite meetings have been organised around the conference, including those of the Commonwealth Association of Law Reform Agencies, and similar such bodies and the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute. The latter is expected to attract chief justices from around 15 jurisdictions. The conference will have moot court competition.

?For lawyers, from other parts of the world, this will serve as a rare opportunity to experience India, one of the most enchanting and culturally rich countries,? Mr Husain said.
