The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun laying a 13-km bicycle track along the road margins to improve the environment of the Bandra-Kurla-Complex (BKC).
The works on the project was started in November at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore. It is expected to be open to public in April. The authority is considering marking the roads with the tracks as a ‘Green Zone' with the track painted green.
Mr Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director, MMRDA, said, “We have been meeting schools in BKC and other commercial establishments about the bicycle track. We are encouraging and motivating them to not only use but also increase the use of bicycles in the complex to help sustaining and improving natural environment in the complex.”
Awareness meetings have been conducted with Arya Vidya Mandir, American School of Bombay and Dhirubhai Ambani School. There is also a core committee of buildings in the BKC with which MMRDA has met to take up the initiative.
