The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) resolved to take legal action following the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) including Ms Kanimozhi Karunanidhi in the chargesheet relating to the 2G scam.

The resolution was moved by high-level committee of the DMK headed by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, which met today, to decide on the course of action the party has to take following the CBI chargesheeting Ms Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of Mr Karunanidhi, and Mr Sharad Kumar, the Managing Director of Kalaignar TV.

On Monday the CBI in a supplementary charge sheet filed in a special court in New Delhi accused Ms Kanimozhi and Mr Sharad Kumar, both of whom hold a 20 per cent stake each in Kalaignar TV, and three others, of “criminal conspiracy and receiving illegal gratification”. The Chief Minister's wife, Ms Dayalu Ammal, who holds a 60 per cent stake in Kalaignar TV, has been listed as a witness.

This follows the first chargesheet filed on April 2, in which former Telecom Minister, and DMK MP, Mr A. Raja, and eight others were accused in the scam.

The CBI has accused them of irregularities in the issue of 2G spectrum telecom licenses and causing an estimated loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer. Three telecom companies – Reliance Communication, Unitech Wireless and Swan Telecom – are also included in the chargesheet.

A copy of the DMK's resolution circulated to the media said it is surprised that Ms Kanimozhi and Mr Kumar have been named by the CBI despite clarifications that the Rs 200 crore received by Kalaignar TV from one of the telecom companies had been returned with interest. The DMK will establish the truth in Court through appropriate legal measures.

The DMK sees the controversy being generated by the media and the Opposition parties as a move to destabilise the DMK and the Congress-led UPA in which it is a member, it said.
