Domestic airlines Air India and Jet Airways have resumed services to and from New York.
This comes after the flights were cancelled over the weekend as the three airports in New York were closed due to Hurricane Irene.
Chennai Airport's Director, Mr P. Hareendranathan, confirmed that Jet Airways' Chennai to New York flight resumed on Monday. The airline had cancelled flights to New York from Chennai, via Brussels, on Saturday and Sunday, he added.
Air India also resumed its flights to Newark, New Jersey and New York on Monday, according to the spokesperson of the airline. The Mumbai-Newark and New Delhi-JFK flights left at 10.30 a.m. India time, he said.
International majors also resume operations
Other international carriers also planned to resume flight services to and from New York. Cathay Pacific said it will resume operations on Monday.
The airline plans to operate additional flights between Hong Kong and New York over the next few days to help passengers stranded by the hurricane.
British Airways partially resumed services. The London Heathrow to New York flight took off as per schedule. Other flights are also expected to resume service shortly.
The US-based airlines, Delta, Continental, American and United said that they expect to return to a near full-schedule by Monday evening.
