Dr. V. Shanta, a household name in cancer care and treatment and Chairman of the Cancer Institute (Women's Indian Association), Adyar, Chennai, has been selected for the conferment of the prestigious Dr Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for the year 2010.

Mr P. Vishnu Murthy, founder and managing trustee of the Dr Y. Nayudamma Memorial Trust, said: “Dr. Shanta has been chosen for the award in recognition of her tireless efforts for over five decades towards bringing solace to lakhs of men, women and children, afflicted with the dreaded disease in the country.”

The award would be presented to Dr Shanta at a function to be held at Tenali, the native town of Dr Nayudamma, on March 5. The recipient would deliver the 19th Dr Y. Nayudamma Memorial Lecture on the theme, “Containing Cancer – Five Decades at the Cancer Institute (WIA)”. Mr Justice N.V. Ramana, Judge, Andhra Pradesh High Court, will present the award to Dr Shanta.

Dr V.K. Saraswat, Dr T. Ramasami, Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, Dr Nori Dattatreyuudu, Dr Sam Pitroda, were among earlier awardees.

A scion of the illustrious family of Tamil Nadu that gifted to the world two Nobel laureates – Sir C.V. Raman and Dr S. Chandrasekhar who were respectively her grand father and paternal uncle – Dr Shanta is a native of Chennai. She has published over 100 papers in national and international journals on oncology.
