Once a brainchild of disgraced Satyam founder B Ramalinga Raju, the EMRI 108 emergency ambulance service, now managed by the GVK group, will soon begin operations in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Modelled after the toll-free emergency service the US' 911, the 108 service, which is maintained by Emergency Management Research Institute (EMRI), an NGO, at present operates in 11 States including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Assam and Meghalaya.

“In the last three years, GVK EMRI has infused about Rs 125 crore into this initiative. We are present in 11 states. By the first week of June, will begin services in UP, initially operating about 900 ambulances to cover the state. In J&K, talks are in the final stages,” the GVK EMRI regional chief operating officer ( Tamil Nadu) Mr B.N. Sridhar said here.

The project's operational as well as capital expenditure is mostly borne by State Governments. Besides, in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the World Bank is financing the cost of the ambulances, while the State Governments is financing the operational costs.
