Efficiency and the motivation to work within the timeframe are important to become effective in public administration, according to Mr Alok Mohan, Inspector General of Police (Western Range), Mangalore.
He said this while delivering the Business Line Club lecture on ‘Managing public administration,' for MBA students at Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management at Nitte in Udupi district, on Friday. Syndicate Bank had sponsored the event.
Management is a process where idea is transformed into reality, and public administration is the management of society where people live, he said. This process should be done efficiently and effectively.
Stating that society has varied resources that are complex in nature, Mr Mohan said managing an institution which is complex is also complex.
In such a situation, efficiency of the decision that is taken in a limited timeframe matters the most. The percentage of error that a person keeps in his work also matters in public administration, he said.
Public administration need not be limited to governmental agencies only. Many youths and NGOs these days want serve rural areas. It was not the case earlier, he said.
Referring to police service, Mr Mohan said private security personnel outnumber police in places such as Bangalore. Security, which was a state issue, is now taken care of by private agencies.
He encouraged students to take up civil service examinations to lead in managing public administration.
The interactive session of Business Line Club lecture with students focused on various areas of public administration and issues related to policing.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Vice-Marshal (retd) K.R. Karnik, Director of the institute, said that his institute wanted to bring civil servants face-to-face with students. This will help them in their career in the coming days.
He congratulated Business Line for bringing civil servants face-to-face with students.
Thanking Mr Mohan for encouraging students to take up civil services examination, Mr Karnik said that Mr Mohan's speech has instilled confidence among students that they can make a difference in the world.
