Readymade garment businesses will shut down on Monday as part of a one-day strike to protest the levy of 10 per cent excise duty.
According to a press release from the Chennai Apparel Association, its members along with the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India and the Retail Association of India and other industry associations relating to garment and textiles, are to participate in the strike.
Leading chain stores and shops will remain closed on Monday to protest the budget proposal to levy 10 per cent excise duty on readymade garments.
Following a meeting of the industry representatives on Friday in Chennai, they are demanding the roll back of the excise duty.
The excise does not hit manufacturers alone, but also the chain of wholesalers and retailers. This will add to the costs of the industry which has been hit by escalating labour costs. The associations will organise a human chain, procession and rally to mark the protest and submit an appeal to the Union Textile Minister, the release said.
