The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to Mr R.S. Goenka and Mr Prashant Goenka, two directors of AMRI Hospitals. Over 90 people (mostly patients) had suffocated to death following a fire at the hospital's Dhakuria premises on December 9, last year.

A division bench comprising Justice Asim Kumar Roy and Justice Ashim Kumar Ray granted bail to the two after it was observed from the statements of senior officials that the day-to-day affairs at the hospital were run by a managing committee.

Observing that investigation in the case was complete and charge sheet submitted by the police, the court noted that four of the accused, including three directors, have already been granted bail.

Dr Moni Chhetri, the managing director of the hospital, who holds the license for the hospital, was granted bail by a trial court, apart from Dr Pranab Dasgupta and senior vice-president Satyabrata Upadhyay.

Another director, Mr R.S. Agarwal was granted bail by the High Court.

A total of 13 persons were arrested in the case, of which nine were directors while the other four were senior officials of the hospital. All of them were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Seven persons are still in custody and three other accused directors – Mr Aditya Agarwal, Mr Preeti Surekha and Mr Rahul Todi – are absconding.
