Massive deployment of information technology has democratised the banking sector by enhancing its reach to the masses, according to Prof Rajan Gurukkal, Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi (MG) University.

This comment came during a speech after Prof Gurukkal inaugurated the new office of the campus branch of State Bank of Travancore (SBT) at the university office at Kottayam, at a meeting presided over by Mr P. Pradeepkumar, Managing Director, SBT.

Two decades ago, the concept of ATM was just a dream. Excellent fusion of technology, coupled with strong commitment of bankers for enhancing the quality of the services, has made things easier for customers, Prof Gurukkal said.

Mobile banking is destined to take customers to newer levels of satisfaction. The banking sector has also been displaying discipline as well as passion for personalised transactions.

In his presidential address, the SBT Managing Director outlined the new banking products in pipeline. He underscored the commitment of his bank to strive for bettering the performances in spheres of its activities.

The new office housed in the University buildings features facilities of modern banking, apart from an Internet kiosk for the benefit of students, faculty and staff of MG University.

At present, the branch has 4,000 account holders on the rolls.

Mr R. Mohan Raj, Deputy General Manger, SBT, welcomed the gathering and Mr T. Ananthakrishna Pillai, Assistant General Manager, proposed a vote of thanks.
