Indians in Egypt numbering 3,600 are safe and the Indian Embassy is in constant touch with them to monitor their well-being in the wake of violent protests against President Mr Hosni Mubarak’s rule.

“The 3,600-strong Indian community in Egypt is safe,” the Indian Embassy here said.

It said that a 24-hour Control Room has been operating in the mission since January 28 to assist the Indian nationals.

The Embassy had earlier facilitated three special flights of Air India on January 31 and February 2 from Cairo to Mumbai to transport Indian nationals, including tourists stranded in Egypt, desirous of leaving the country immediately but not getting confirmed seats on commercial flights, it said.

The Embassy statement came amid unprecedented protests against Mr Mubarak’s 30-year rule. More than 150 people have been killed and thousands injured in the uprising which began on Tuesday last.
