As many as eight States are in the process of setting up project monitoring groups to facilitate clearance of smaller infrastructure projects on the lines of the one set up by the Prime Minister at the Centre.
Madhya Pradesh is the latest to have asked the Prime Minister’s Project Monitoring Group (PMG) for assistance to set up its own mechanism for projects below ₹1,000 crore based in the State.
Queueing upOther States that are in the process of receiving training or are waiting for their turn include Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, said Anil Swarup, Additional Secretary and Chairman, Project Monitoring Group.
“I had a meeting with senior officials from Madhya Pradesh in Bhopal on Monday.
“They are very keen to set up the State-level monitoring group as there are several small projects that they would want expedited,” Swarup told Business Line .
MP systemMadhya Pradesh already has a single-window clearance system in place for infrastructure projects that it wants to integrate with the activities of the PMG.
“We have already drawn up the training schedule for States and training for three States has started,” Swarup said. The States would adopt the same software being used by the Centre to keep track of projects.
Speedy approvalsThe Prime Minister’s Project Monitoring Group, which has facilitated clearances of stuck infrastructure projects worth ₹4.9 lakh crore in less than a year, mostly takes up projects over ₹1,000 crore.
Smaller projectsStates are jumping into the fray as there are several projects smaller in size that are also stuck and might need some help for coordinating between Ministries and Departments.
The PMG has put in place a Web-based information system for use by both Government and private investors to provide details of stuck projects and point out where they are stuck.
The information on a stuck project is first accessed by the Ministry or Department concerned which verifies it and then forwards it to the PMG for further action.
The PMG then brings together all Ministries involved to sort out problems.
