The Department of Industries and Commerce in Karnataka is planning to showcase Mysore region as MSME and tourism destination.
“During the Global Investors Meet (GIM) road show both in India and Far East (Singapore and Japan) we got good responses to set up MSME units and tourism related investments,” said a senior department official.
“The department has got investments proposals to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore and MoUs will be signed during the global investors meet (GIM) to be held in June,” he added.
Only Mysore has a reasonably good amount of manufacturing share (16.1 per cent) in its district income.
The other five districts are basically agriculture based. Of the rest, Mandya and Hassan have relatively better manufacturing base.
Of these six districts, only Mysore district is relatively better developed and contributes 4.4 per cent to the state GSDP. The remaining five districts contribute 7.9 per cent to Karnataka GSDP.
Industrial base
According to industry department statistics, Mysore district has better industrial base, followed to some extent by Hassan and Mandya. The bulk of the large and medium industries, 42 out of 60, are in Mysore district, followed by seven units in Mandya and eight units in Hassan.
Even in the case of small-scale industrial (SSI) units, of the total 66,458 SSI units in the region (as on March 31), Mysore with 23,663 units (36 per cent), Mandya with 9,804 units (15 per cent) and Hassan with 12,099 (18 per cent) have a bulk share of about 70 per cent of the units in this region.
According to the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) study, barring Chamrajanagar district, other five districts of the Mysore region consisting of Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya and Mysore have fair amount of industrial base.
Also the region is fairly well placed in the Human Development Index rankings.
However, there is wide variance in the development of these six districts.
Connectivity
Both roads, railway and air connectivity to the city has improved. Road connectivity between Mysore to Mangalore plays and important role as it connects to the port (New Mangalore Port) and for the development of industry and tourism in this region.
Railways – Track doubling works is expected to complete in 2012-13 and railway electrification surveys to be conducted this year (2012-13).
Mr J.R. Bangera, President, FKCCI, said “The most vital Mysore-Sampaje stretch road is completed. We urge the government to expedite the work on widening of Sampaje-Ghat section to Mani so that it is completed by end of June 2012.”
Mysore airport plays a major role in improving the tourist inflow in this region, along with adding value to the IT-BT and other industries.
“Government should negotiate with the service providers to start operating flights to the Mysore airport with smaller aircraft,” said Mr Bangera.
