The Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised a seminar on making trade units high-tech through the implementation of 5S and Kaizen technology.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr S. N. Umakanthan, renowned technocrat, said the main problems that an office normally faces are: tools may not be found when required, employees spending a lot of time for searching material requisition slips, report pads and not arranged properly. To crack this menace, he said 5S (Sorting, Systematic arrangement, Spic and Span, Standardise and Sustain) is the ideal solution. It is a process for creating and maintaining a clean, organised, safe and high-performance work place. And, it will help to achieve high levels of growth, safety, quality and productivity, he said.

Answering a question, Mr Umakanthan said benefits are many if a company, whether it is small and medium scale enterprises or corporate, follow the 5S method. “Advantage of 5S is it helps to minimize loss of time due to unnecessary searching; can easily detect machine problems, guarantees more floor space and increases longevity of equipments due to clean and organised workplace, he explained.

He said Kaizen is all about change for betterment.

“Kaizen means to do incremental, step by step improvements without exorbitant investment and by participation and consistent commitment of all.
