Kerala should focus on quality of investments coming its way and direct them to the right areas, says Mr G. V. Sanjay Reddy, Chairman, CII-Southern Region.

Mr Reddy, also Vice-Chairman of GVK Industries, was here to review the build-up to Emerging Kerala 2012 – a Global Connect Initiative to be held in Kochi later this year.

Some welcome changes are apparent, but the Government must strive towards improving its image as a destination for investment, Mr Reddy said.

While promising to partner with the Government in these initiatives, he said the State should ideally play to its strengths and not aim to mimic its neighbours.

Merely flaunting some numbers vis-à-vis others should not be the aim, since Kerala has its own sets of challenges and opportunities.

For this reason, it should focus on the tourism, healthcare and medical tourism, agro-processing, IT, education and MSME sectors.

As Chairman of the Southern Region, Mr Reddy said he would seek the participation of the State Government in two major initiatives planned for this year and the next.

The first is the Festival of South India on Art and Culture, a travelling jamboree with alternative stops every year at the four major cities in South India.

To be held over a period of four days, the ‘carnival’ is being planned to be held at the four major southern cities of Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kochi.

CII wishes to see hundreds of thousands of people belonging to all age groups – from the young to the elderly – to take part in the event.

The aim is also to connect the younger generation of today with the past by seeking to familiarise them with various aspects of the past.

The first event is scheduled for the next year, and the venue would be decided later after discussing with stakeholders.

The other major initiative is the proposed Centre for Excellence (CoE) for Innovation, Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship to be set up in Kerala.

This falls in the pattern of CoEs set up elsewhere in the South with disparate themes as in Hyderabad (green buildings) and Bangalore (quality aspects).
