The Kudumbashree Mission is set to launch a State-level garment consortium aimed at boosting the small-scale apparel units in Kerala.

Styled ‘Kadambari' (Kudumbashree Apparel Designing and Manufacturing Business Alliance for Revival and Incubation), the consortium will cover nine common facility centres (CFCs) presently engaged in garment designing in various parts of the State. Of them, five are located in Kozhikode district and the others in Kasargod, Kannur, Alappuzha and Kollam districts.

According to the Kudumbashree Mission District Coordinator, Mr K.K. Anilkumar, the formal activities of the consortium, which will be headquartered in Kozhikode, are slated to commence by the end of this month.

Management

The management structure of the venture will be based on cooperative principles and as per the existing guidelines, individual units will be the owners of the consortium.

The Kudumbashree Mission will appoint two professional teams at the State level to help the consortium in various business activities. The teams will assist the member units in dealing with production-related issues, developing appropriate product line, imparting new skills and meeting the production targets.

The consortium will take upon itself responsibilities such as finding remunerative orders from government agencies and private dealers, allocation of the orders among the individual units, coordination of delivery of products and cash collection and establishing distribution networks for the products.

The State Government will initially spend Rs 30 lakh for supporting the consortium and after one year, it will be allowed to operate independently utilising its own funds generated through the sale of products.

According to official figures, around 15-20 per cent of small-scale units now functioning under Kudumbashree are in the sewing and tailoring sector. The consortium is designed to pool the resources of the CFCs together and create a shared professional management structure that will enable taking up specialised activities.
