By-election to a Maharashtra Legislative Council seat will be held on May 5, paving the way for the Chief Minister, Mr Prithviraj Chavan, to get elected to the legislature.
The announcement of the schedule for the by-poll by the Election Commission came close on the heels of the Bombay High Court giving the go-ahead for it yesterday. Mr Chavan will be contesting the election to enter the State legislature, as per constitutional requirements. At present, he is not a member of either of the two Houses of the State legislature. The seat fell vacant after Mr Sanjay Dutt of the Congress resigned on March 11 to facilitate Mr Chavan's election.
