The Union Labour Ministry, along with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is meeting trade unions, employers and state government representatives on Wednesday to discuss ways to ensure wider registration of construction workers.
The Labour Ministry feels that one reason for the low registration of construction workers with State welfare boards is lack of awareness about welfare schemes.
Till March 2010, the total number of registered construction workers stood at only 59,05,660.
The two-day meeting will work out ways to ensure that construction workers too get benefits from schemes such as Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, a cashless health insurance cover, which has now been extended to building and construction labourers registered under the Building and other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment of Condition of Service), Act, 1996.
