Employees of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) have launched a nationwide strike in protest against the Centre for failing to approve a proposal for wage revision pending with it.
The wage revision is due from November 2007, according to Mr Jose T. Abraham, Vice-President, All-India Nabard Employees Association.
The association had submitted a charter of demands to the Nabard management in 2007. But the management initiated discussion on the charter only during the second half of last year.
After several rounds of discussion, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the association and the management on October 21, 2010. It was approved by the Nabard's board of directors on November 8, 2010.
The management forwarded the proposal to the Centre three days later, which has been pending ever since. This raises questions about the independence of the board of an autonomous body such as Nabard to take a decision for itself and in time, Mr Abraham said. The employees launched the first phase of agitation on February 1 which will culminate in a one-day strike on March 11.
