Newspapers in Malaysia is still a preferred source of information even as its circulation saw decline elsewhere in the world due to falling readership.
“In the past five years, newspaper readership grew by 14 per cent. The number of newspaper readers has risen to 17.9 million last year compared with 15.6 million in 2006,” Malaysian Newspaper Publishers Association (MNPA) chairman, Mr Mohd Nasir Ali, said.
“The newspaper is here to stay as it is an integrated source of content.” He said Malaysian newspapers are also embracing technology with content being uploaded onto online version.
“This makes newspapers a wholly-integrated media platform,” Mr Ali was quoted as saying by ‘The Star’ on Saturday.
The advertising expenditure in Malaysian newspapers also saw a 42 per cent increase from 2.7 billion ringgit (1 ringgit = Rs 15) in 2006 to 3.9 billion ringgit in 2010, Mr Ali said.
“Such continued growth in revenue and readership showed that newspapers would be sustainable well into the future,” he added.
