In what is seen as a breather for tax audit assessees, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the last date for electronic filing of returns and reports to October 31.

Such assessees were earlier asked to file the same by September 30.

The CBDT move comes in the wake of the New Delhi-based chartered accountants forum approaching the Delhi High Court on this matter.

The petitioner said software glitches in the e-filing system had come as an impediment for compliance with the earlier due date.

The scope of e-filing was expanded this year (assessment year 2013-14) with the law mandating that all tax audit reports be filed electronically.

The latest CBDT move to extend the due date will not only help tax audit cases, but also assessees such as trusts who were earlier required to file their returns by September 30, it is learnt.

Unable to solve software glitches in its e-filing system, the CBDT had asked assessees to manually file tax audit reports by September 30.
