Job opportunities abound — particularly in IT, retail and financial services — for management graduates, but they need to focus on a rounded personality. One needs people and business skills, including communication, beside developing expertise in at least one domain to secure a good job and be a successful manager.

Speaking at a panel discussion on ‘Challenges and Opportunities in Management Profession', Ms Uma Rao, General Manager, IBM India, felt that one has to start small and learn the various aspects of management before reaching the top corporate levels. This would be possible only when one understands nuances right from the grassroot level.

The discussion was held at Paniniya Institute of Dental Science & Research Centre by Business Line and sponsored by Guru Nanak Institutes.

Expansion

Professor Gagandeep Singh Kohli, Vice-Chairman, Guru Nanak Group of Institutions, said they encourage such interactive sessions to provide management students with an opportunity to interact with experts. He said there is constant effort to improve the quality of education. “The group is on expansion mode and plans to add new courses.”

Ms Rao felt that communication skills play an important role in building a career, as this sets apart one from the rest. And communication skills are not developed overnight. They have to be gained over years and come through lot of practice. That is where institutions could play a role in encouraging group activities and learning through case studies.

Mr Jagadish Ramadugu, General Manager, Spencer's Retail Ltd, said though most graduates want to quickly become chief executives, they should aim big but start small, and get hands-on experience before.

Mr Mathew Joseph, a veteran in the banking industry and Vice-President, Centrum Capital Ltd, said financial services have emerged as a multi-disciplinary area with demand for trained professionals in different areas within the general domain. Citing the example of State Bank of India, he said they recruited over 3,000 people in different management areas, such as marketing and research.

He said there are ways of looking at a potential recruit depending upon the sector. Hence, students should clearly choose a path and gain expertise in one segment to make their task easy.
