The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has held out the assurance that a solution to the problems of dyeing units in Tirupur, which have remained closed following the Madras High Court order over the pollution issue, would be found.

He also said that Tamil Nadu has ‘become a model state in many areas' because of the ‘visionary leadership' of the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi.

Speaking at a public meeting in support of the DMK-led front in the coming Assembly elections at Coimbatore on Saturday night, the Prime Minister said Tamil Nadu was an example for rural development and the quality of education offered was ‘exceedingly high' and the district and municipal administration in the State are ‘among the most efficient ones' in the nation. It was also a hub for the automotive industry in the country.

The Prime Minister said during the past five years, the Congress-DMK alliance had worked hard to take Tamil Nadu to `new highs' and cited the ‘unprecedented expansion and modernisation' of the National Highways in the State, the formation of a National Maritime Academy at Chennai, the upgradation of Government Hospital at Salem at a cost of Rs 120 crore and the sanction for establishment of Regional institute of Paramedical Sciences at Coimbatore at a cost of Rs 80 crore etc as proof of that.

He also said Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai would get a boost with the sanctioning of programmes for infrastructure improvement under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The Textile Upgradation Fund Scheme of Rs 25,000 crore will also help the State and he stressed the need for carrying this ‘good work forward'. He said he was ‘aware of the problems prevailing in the textile city of Tirupur' and said ‘we are committed to find a viable solution' to these problems.

Dr Singh said he recently came across a report by some eminent economists who ranked Tamil Nadu as the No 1 state in the country and said to ‘take Tamil Nadu to even greater heights', he urged voters to back the Congress-DMK alliance at the polls.

The Union Textiles Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, and the State Rural Industries Minister, Mr Pongalur N. Palanisamy, were also present.
