Victims of medical negligence voiced their angst at an event on Saturday evening. Hundreds of people united against the growing mismanagement in healthcare system in West Bengal at an event organised by People for Better Treatment (PBT).

PBT is a Kolkata-based forum that promotes better healthcare. Explaining PBT's objectives, President, Dr Kunal pointed out that the forum's fight was to ensure value of people's lives not only in the State but also across the country.

About 20 relatives of the victims of AMRI hospital fire accident decried the poor administration of the hospital authority. The fire mishap at the AMRI hospital on December 9 killed more than 90 people. Another group of affected people in various cases of ruthless healthcare system shared their bitter experiences.

Dr Saha said, “The number of cases of medical negligence is increasing by the day in West Bengal. It is such a crime that cannot be compared with any other offence in our society. People are usually duped at the time of crisis.”

According to Dr Saha, even though the State has undergone a major transition in government, “rampant corruption and pervasive medical negligence” continue to haunt the healthcare system even in Mamata Banerjee's reign.”

PBT criticised the new government's decision to form an adhoc “medical council” in the State instead of holding a long overdue council election. Dr Saha also raised questions on why the “accused” board members of the AMRI hospital were bailed out.

The forum discussed concerns over the growing rate of fake medicines in the market. “Fake medicines are increasingly spreading in the market and the government should look into it. It is quite a difficult task for a general patient to differentiate between fake and real medicines,” Dr Saha urged.
