The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is working on developing quality standards for imported food products. “We do have some standards to begin with, but we need to take more steps in this regard to ensure the safety of food for consumption which comes from outside,” the FSSAI Chairman, Mr K. Chandramouli, said on Tuesday. He said the FSSAI was working on standards with all stakeholders, including scientists, experts, industry officials and laboratories, apart from the food business operators involved in import-export of food material.
Mr Chandramouli said the FSSAI was also working on setting standards for traditional Indian food as well. He was speaking at the FMCG summit organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham). Mr S.K Jindal, Chairperson of the Assocham Investment and Investors’ Commitee, sought speedy implementation of the Goods and Services Tax. “Due to the present regime of Central Sales Tax and Local Sales Tax, FMCG companies are forced to set up manufacturing or warehousing and distribution facilities in each State they want to do business in. Alternatively they have to pay double taxation,” he added.
