In a rare heart surgery here, doctors replaced the ‘arch of aorta' of a 23-year-old woman after a 15-hour-long operation here.
Well-known cardiac surgeon, Dr M. K. Moosa Kunhi, said replacing the arch of aorta in such a young person has not been recorded anywhere in medical literature.
The surgery was peformed at the private Lakeshore hospital here on March 24 and the patient is recovering, he said.
Normally the arch of aorta is 2cm in diameter, but in this patient it had increased in size up to 7 cm, and would have ruptured any time and would have been fatal, Dr Moosa said.
Generally, this kind of disease is seen in elderly patients over 70 years of age.
