The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has made huge seizures of Red Sanders wood in recent times.

On May 26, the DRI officials seized 8.2 tonnes of red sanders valued at Rs 82 lakhs in the international market at Tuticorin port.

The material, which was from a container, was heading for the Jebel Ali port. It was recalled from Colombo after it sailed from Tuticorin.

In a press release, the DRI said its Chennai Zonal unit officials seized around 47 tonnes of red sanders, which is valued at Rs 4.7 crores. It also arrested four persons. Red sanders, a wood species, widely found in the Chittoor and Kadapa districts of Andhra Pradesh has a lucrative demand in countries such as Japan and China.

In another instance, the DRI officials also detained two passengers travelling by the AP Sampark Kranthi Express at the Secunderabad Railway station. They were found to contain about 65 kg of Ephedrine, valued at Rs 13 crore in global market. Ephedrine is a highly sought after chemical in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine.

It is a controlled substance under the Narcotic and Psychotropic substances Act, 1985.
