To meet the acute shortage of skilled manpower experienced in the State, the Government, through the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Mission and in partnership with the industry, will identify skill gaps and design course material leading to Modular Employable Skills Certification, said Mr Mohan Pyare, Chairman and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), here on Saturday.

He was delivering the inaugural address of a conference on ‘Manufacturing Excellence through MSME -the success mantra' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Madurai Zone.

He said that the training programme will be launched in all Government and Government-aided Arts and Science Colleges for soft skills and all Government Industrial Training Institutes through recognised vocation training providers for technical skills. The programme is aimed at training about 1.50 lakh students during the year 2011-12.

He said that a multi-pronged strategy is being evolved to improve power availability in the State and from next year, uninterrupted quality power could be supplied to industries. To promote MSME sector, besides capital subsidy, other ways would be examined to provide additional incentives. As a first step, Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation will provide credit with 3 per cent interest rebate.

To promote export-oriented coir and jute-based industries, for which huge potential is seen, the Government has planned to provide credit and technology support with a total outlay of Rs 100 crore during 2011-12.

SIDCO planned to establish eight more industrial estates during the current financial year and has identified 2,266 acres in 25 locations for promotion of industrial clusters, he said.

Mr R. Dinesh, Vice-Chairman, CII, Tamil Nadu, in his special address earlier said that the development of the region need not depend upon a big ticket investment alone and the same could be attracted once the supplier base is strengthened.

Mr Shyam Prakash Gupta, Chairman, CII, Madurai Zone, presided and Dr S. Raja Mohan, Convenor-MSME Panel, Madurai Zone, presented the theme address.
