Trade bodies in the city have welcomed the Tamilnadu Revised Budget for 2011-12. The Agro Food Chamber of Commerce and Industry has hailed the Budget as laying an unparalleled special focus on agricultural production and growth of agro-based industries in the State.
The Chamber has observed that when the number of people engaged in agriculture in the State is shrinking day by day due to non-viability of such operations, it is highly laudable that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, has chosen to make a turn-around in the fortunes of the farmers by ushering in the second green revolution.
In a statement here, the Chamber lauded the proposal to increase the overall subsidy for small and marginal farmers under the National Mission on micro irrigation from 75 per cent to 100 per cent and the other farmers from 65 per cent to 75 per cent, the target fixed for enhancing foodgrain production to 115 lakh tonnes during 2011–2012 from the present 85.35 lakh tonnes.
