The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) is going to take up low-cost, affordable housing projects for the economically weaker sections and the middle classes, according to Mr K. Sashidhar, Vice-chairman.

He told presspersons here on Monday that the officials were already directed to identify suitable lands and prepare proposals for the purpose. Soon, the housing schemes would be formulated and announced, he added.

He also said that hereafter allotment of plots in VUDA layouts would be taken up only after completing the infrastructure development worksto avoid the resentment of the allottees. The decision had been taken in response to the grievances placed before him by some of the applicants at the recent auctions held by the VUDA.

He said infrastructure works in some of the layouts in which the plots were allotted through auctions, had been initiated and estimates were under finalisation for the remaining. “VUDA is conscious of its responsibility to provide basic amenities such as roads, drains, power lines and drinking water pipelines as per the layout rules and it will definitely fulfil its promise made to the allottees. There will be no deviation in this regard and VUDA will always strive to keep up its credibility and trust among the public,” he said.

Mr Sashidhar said VUDA would take steps to curb growth of unauthorised layouts in the VUDA jurisdiction, spreading over 5573 square kilometres in four districts. Meetings have been scheduled from first week of June to give orientation and training to the representatives of local bodies falling in the limits. The first meeting will be held for Visakhapatnam district on June 1 with the panchayat secretaries and other officials working under revenue and district panchayat officer.
