The sale of ATVM Smart Cards on Western Railway has registered a growth of 41 per cent in May 2011 compared to the same period last year.

During May this year, 12,436 smart cards were sold compared with 8,821 in May 2010, a release said.

To provide easy, convenient and uninterrupted services to its smart card users, the railways has launched a special drive to keep all the ATVMs in good working condition by constant monitoring and quick action to carry outs repairs in case of fault.

Since its launch in October 2007, 38 million tickets have been issued on smart cards. Around 5.8 lakh smart cards have been sold till now, the Western Railway said.

About 6-7 tickets can be issued per minute through an ATVM and it was observed that 300 or more tickets have been issued in an hour during peak hours from some ATVMs. Even during peak hours, no queues were noticed at ATVMs due to its capacity to issue tickets quickly and conveniently in a few seconds.

In addition, to facilitate commuters, the Western Railway is in the process of procuring 305 more ATVMs in two years and will also launch a campaign to promote the use of ATVMs for the benefit of its commuters as it is time saving and easy to use.

Single journey tickets, return journey tickets and platform tickets are issued from the ATVMs and the facility of renewal of season tickets is also available which would soon facilitate issue of journey extension tickets.
